The Indian Premier League is known for some wholesome entertainment in the form of the shortest cricketing format. It has redefined the way fans see Indian cricket. Not only from India, but fans have seen some great performances by players from foreign soil.

As the 2022 IPL edition kickstarts very soon, many cricket fanatics await the mega auction. A time period where every team tries to obtain the best players to their arsenal for getting that prestigious IPL title.

Indeed, the previous edition gave fans some impeccable cricketing performances by several show stealers. Also, with the addition of two new teams (Ahmedabad & Lucknow), fans can expect this to be the biggest and intriguing auction in the history of IPL. As the name suggests, the upcoming mega auction would be an intense and mega battle between the powerhouse franchises. So, based on the player releases made by the teams, here are the

Players who can be potential captains after getting picked in IPL mega auction

1. KL Rahul

When it comes to consistency in IPL, KL Rahul acts as the Care-of address for it. KL Rahul is currently one of the most destructive batters in the current cricketing world. His performance with the bat is so consistent that he has made more than 500 runs every season since the 2018 edition.

As reports suggest, he is likely to part ways with the Punjab Kings. Though he didn’t have had a great stint as a captain with the Punjab Kings, a new team with a new squad and coaching department might help him display his potential and calibre.

Currently, he is the full-time vice-captain of the national T20I side, which will help him nurture his captaincy skills. As his performance suggests, many teams are eager to buy the consistent opener to their side. Especially the two new sides would be aiming for him as they want to give a solid foundation to their brand-new and upcoming squad. Also, as per reports, he is likely to lead the new franchise of Lucknow.

2. David Warner

David Warner is probably one of the most entertaining players, on and off-field. A batter with sheer aggression and controlled power-hitting, he is a player to be checking out in both IPL and the national side.

When it comes to his IPL stint, David Warner was the most consistent captain for the Sunrisers Hyderabad. He led the Orange Army to the playoffs five times straight (2016–2021). Also, he won their first IPL title as the winning captain (2016).

But after a forgettable 2021 edition, he was sacked as a captain and removed from the playing XI as he couldn’t show the desired results with the bat and leadership for the team (195 runs in 8 matches). And by this, he would part his ways with Sunrisers Hyderabad from the upcoming edition. But he made a commendable comeback (289 runs in 7 innings) by winning the ‘Player of the Tournament’ title for the winning Australian team in the recent T20 World Cup. Thanks to his batting and captaincy, it’s no surprise that he will be the most sought-after candidate in the upcoming mega auctions.

3. Shreyas Iyer

When fans talk about Shreyas Iyer, it is believed that he is the future of Indian cricket. Be it from batting to captaincy, his dedication and commitment towards the sport are commendable.

When the news came that Shreyas Iyer got released by the Delhi Capitals, many cricket fanatics didn’t expect that coming. Known for his impeccable captain efforts towards the squad since 2019, he has led the team towards the playoffs two times straight and led them to their first IPL final (2020).

But due to a severe shoulder injury, he couldn’t play the second half of the 2021 edition, and Rishabh Pant took the responsibility to captain the blue tigers. And Rishabh Pant’s performance as a captain was marvelous. So, chances for Shreyas Iyer coming back as a captain seem vague, as Rishabh Pant is another promising future star of Indian Cricket. So, as Iyer’s skillset suggests, many teams are eager to have a young captain like him in their unit.

4. Aaron Finch

The skipper of the Australian national white-ball format side, Aaron Finch, is a player who hasn’t disappointed the cricketing world with the bat. Not only with the bat, but his captaincy acts as a highlight for him. His captaincy led Australia to their first T20 World Cup in the recently concluded 2021 edition.

When it comes to his IPL stint, he has represented the most number of franchises in the tournament’s history (8 franchises). The last time he played the IPL was during the 2020 edition for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. And he wasn’t pleasing enough with the bat (268 runs in 12 matches), which got him unsold in the 2021 edition.

But his decent 35.7 average in T20Is does show his calibre in the shortest format. Also, being the winning captain of the 2021 WT20 edition, his captaincy seems promising for many. So, there is no surprise that whichever team he gets into, he will show his 100% dedication and calibre towards it.

5. Shikhar Dhawan

Hailed as Gabbar, Shikhar Dhawan is a player that has an amalgamation of cricketing skills and experience. Predominantly known for his IPL stint, in his 192 appearances, he has made a laudable 5784 runs with an average of 34.84. Even in the recent edition, he was the fifth-highest run-scorer of the tournament (587 runs in 16 matches).

When it comes to the left-hand batter’s captaincy stint, he has captained Sunrisers Hyderabad during the 2014 edition. He was also a part-time captain for the National side in the T20I format.

After his three-year stint with his debut team, he is now available on the mega auction list after getting released by Delhi Capitals. Not only just with the bat, but he can be a handy captain for any team.
